Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – Mehrunes’ Razor
I was commissioned to build a replica of Mehrunes’ Razor from the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim video game. Here’s the finished piece! (Full set of photos here)

Here’s the skinny on the build process. I started with a vector that I drew up in Inkscape from in-game screen shots.

The basic shape of the blade and hilt were cut from layers of foam PVC. The middle layer is 3/8″ thick and the inlay part of the blade/hilt detail were cut from 1/8″ thick foam PVC.

The layers of foam PVC were all glued together with epoxy. The flush edges were sanded down smooth. The edge of the blade curves in a bit, so I sanded it out with a drum sander on my Dremel.

I got a chance to use my new lathe for the handle of the dagger. I poured some plastic resin in a toilet paper roll to get a cylinder of plastic and then turned that on my lathe. The orb pommel was made from an acrylic sphere and was epoxied to a threaded rod that was used to attach all of the parts of the dagger.

I don’t have many progress photos of the scabbard, but you can get a decent idea of what I did here. It’s layers of plastic again and I glued cloth on the interior to protect the blade of the dagger. I curved a piece of foam PVC for the belt loop and riveted it to the scabbard.

I don’t have progress photos, but the gem and tiny hook thing details on the pommel were made by hand from small pieces of PVC and attached to the pommel with bits of wire for support. The Oblivion symbol on the scabbard was made by shaping some Magic Sculpt. Then the whole thing was sanded and primed!

Side note: I also made a mold of the dagger so that I can make more copies.
I’ve been enjoying my airbrush and used it for all of the flat colors on the dagger. The rest of the detail was painted by hand. Here is the finished, painted piece! If you like it, do me a favor and like my facebook page and/or follow me on twitter. I usually post progress photos ever day that I’m working on a prop!

That is kickass, man. Pure perfection. I swear someday I’m going to build a blacksmith forge in my backyard and this will be the first thing I create.
Do you plan on selling a cad file for this or is there one people can download? It would be awesome to have this sent to someone with a 3d printer that can do metal.
I don’t have a CAD file of this one. I do, however have a mold of it and make castings in plastic resin.
this is amazing! how much would it cost to commission one?
Please send commission questions to punishedprops@gmail.com. Thanks! =)
cool, i sent you an email
Nice! I would love to buy one of these; might send an email later about that.
Btw, I’m taking AutoCAD in my school and when I have free time; I’m going to work on an CAD file for this but I need measurements. Only thing I have is a few Extrude Measurements, really. Email me them, if you want to help out.
I HAVE to have, one how much would it cost if I wanted to purchase one off you as I collect replica swords and knives from film and video games this would take pride of place in my collection.
Also do you make any more replica Elder Scrolls weapons?
I’m curious how much a commission like this costs, I might be interested.
Thank you everyone for your kind words! If you have questions about commissioning your own copy of this dagger or any prop from this game or another, please shoot me an email at punishedprops@gmail.com.
Yes please. I’ll take two.
I’ve been watching your stuff for awhile (Scott Johnson referred us to your site). I’ve been wanting to do casting like this for awhile. Other than your site (which is great) is there a good how-to site you would recommend for us beginners?
Tap Plastics has a lot of really good tutorials on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/tapplastics
could you replicate daedric and glass swords and what would the damage be
Please send commission requests to punishedprops@gmail.com. Thanks!
I’m waiting for a reply from an email I’ve sent and was wondering if you did got it or not; I might’ve sent it to the wrong person.
Also, have you ever made Sunder and Keening, the two Dwemer Artifacts?
Hi Jusey,
If I somehow missed your email, I apologize! Please send me another. I have not made Sunder and Keening, but those are pretty awesome looking pieces! =D
I just resent my one email. If you don’t get it then can you try emailing me at “Jusey01@aol.com”?
Hi,
I sent you guys a few emails about commissioning me one of these but have not recieved a reply?
I am really interested in purchasing one of these daggers and would love to see how much it would be for one.
Thanks!

Hi Sebastian, I got your email and have responded. Thanks! =)
This deejay.Just wanted to say i sent you an email about the dagger.
I’m the one that commissioned this and just received it today. I’m just writing to give Bill props (no pun intended) for a job well done. All I did was send him a few screenshots from my game and 3 weeks later, he sent me a picture of the piece with all minute detail accounted for, right down to the weathering on the blade and hilt. Seeing one of these things up close really gives one appreciation for the time and effort that is involved and I couldn’t be happier with the finished product. Bill is very professional and pleasant to deal with and if any of you have something from a movie or video game you’d like built, I wholeheartily recommend dropping him a line.
Thank you so much for the opportunity, David! =D
Heya again. I’m just getting a little worried because I hadn’t gotten a reply and I don’t know why. Is there any other way I can contact you that isn’t via emails?
Hi! I just tried emailing you. Not sure why I’m not getting your emails.
This dagger is awesome i use this dagger and the wabbajack as my main weapons as my character is a high elf deadra collecter like my character in skyrim i just have to have this replica
£50.00 on the table whos with me
p.s any chance of other daedric and dwarven items id love to get the 9 devine amulets that would be sweet.
hey i was wondering what one of these would cost because i might want to buy one.
All of these comments I’ve been hereing about making daedric weapons and glass weapons, but there was one thing that crossed my mind. It would be sooo cool and wicked if you made the Mace of Molag Bal. That would be AWESOME!!!! xD
This. Is. Wicked.
Not my type, however, I like bigger weapons. I just sent you an email asking what it would take to get a Wuuthrad commisioned, cause I love that freaking axe.
That is an awesome replica of Mehrunes’ Razor ! Would love you to do Keening and Sunder from the elder scrolls series. Might send you a email.
Thanks! =)
No one can forge it! You want to know why?!?! In legend, it says that only Mehrunes Dagon can forge this piece, and it is blessed with his destructiveness and evilness that only he himself can make and forge.
That said, no one can really make it like Mehrunes Dagon, unless, you have the heart of evil and destruction…lol just kidding, any one could make it out of metal if they really wanted to, but have fun
xD =P
